Mamma Mia The Movie

Mamma Mia The Movie Background

Mamma Mia The Movie is set on a beautiful idyllic Greek island, the movie is the tale of a single mother Donna (Meryl Streep) who owns a run down hotel villa, where she has to be a jack of all trades, and just manages to scrape a living. Her gorgeous daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is due to be married and longs to meet her father. Behind her mothers back, she reads a diary, giving the names of three lovers – each her possible father. Unbeknown to Donna she writes to each man and invites them to the island to attend her wedding. The long lost boyfriends Harry (Colin Firth), Sam (Brosnan), and Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) arrive on the island and are hidden away from Donna – or so Sophie thinks.

Donna is preoccupied with pre wedding plans and reminiscent giddiness following the arrival of her two best friends Tanya (Christine Baranaki) and Rosie (Julia Walters). Whilst pottering around the villa she stumbles upon the hidden men. Donna turns to her eccentric friends for support and vows that nothing with spoil her daughters wedding day. Over the course of the next day, Sophie is determined to get to know the men and finally discover which one is her father, as this will be the man who gives her away at her wedding. And so hen and stag parties follow, set amongst beautiful, romantic scenery and to the tunes of Abba love ballads.

Mamma Mia DVD Music

Yes, a musical it is, for dialogue is few and far between, but you will not be disappointed watching Meryl Streep belt out Abba classics. She bounds around the set like a twenty something year old woman, and you cannot help but admire her style and energy. She really throws herself into this role and has a truly wonderful voice. Sadly though, it is doubtful she will win an Oscar for this performance – but if there was an award for fabulous cheesiness, then this movie would be a winner every time.

There are many unmissable scenes in this Mamma Mia The Movie – from gorgeous wish it was me scenes between Sophie and her boyfriend, to glad its not me scenes where Julie Walters staggers across the table top daring a scared man to ‘Take a Chance on Me’! With scenes from the hen and stag parties, there is plenty of eye candy whatever your tastes – speaking of which you cannot help but admire Pierce Brosnan, our former Bond man camping it up around the villa – not sure M would approve at all!
